Kim & Chris Ewen

We are SO excited to welcome you to our home! As the founders of XL Escapes, we pour our hearts into creating a space where you can relax, unwind, and make lasting memories.

With two rescue dogs—Holly from Bosnia and Buddy from All Bullie Rescue—and Nala, our beautiful ginger cat (and undisputed Queen of the house), we understand how important it is to feel not just at home, but truly content and relaxed—especially when traveling with your furry companions.

Our goal is to offer more than just a holiday; we want to provide a home away from home where you can escape daily pressures, have a laugh, and enjoy quality time with loved ones. Whether it’s a cosy night in, exploring the local area, or simply making time for yourself, we’re here to make your stay special.

If you have any requests—big or small—just let us know. We’re always happy to help (and we love an excuse to bring a smile to your face, drink in hand, of course!).

Meet Your Hosts

Ann and Martin Harrison purchased Tallentire Hall in 2016 and have been lovingly restoring it ever since. Passionate about both history and hospitality, they’ve created a retreat that balances luxury with genuine warmth — and puts dogs at the centre. From the 6ft paddock to spare crates and throws, every detail reflects their belief that dogs deserve holidays as much as their humans.

Tallentire Hall – Luxury Dog-Friendly Cottages in the Lake District

⚲ Tallentire, Cumbria

2–6 guests per cottage · 1–3 bedrooms · 1–2 bathrooms · Upto 2 Dogs welcomed · Enclosed garden & dog paddock · 4–6ft fencing · All breeds welcomed · 11.5 acres of private gardens & woodland · Historic Grade II Listed Hall

On the edge of the Lake District and just a few miles from West Cumbria’s sandy beaches, Tallentire Hall is a historic estate offering three award-winning holiday cottages. With secure enclosed gardens, a brand-new 6ft dog paddock, and luxury touches throughout, this is a true haven for dogs of all breeds — and their humans.

Full Property Description:

Dating back to 1590, Tallentire Hall is steeped in history and surrounded by 11.5 acres of landscaped gardens, terraces, and woodland. Restored by Ann and Martin Harrison, the Hall now welcomes guests to three stunning cottages: Gamekeeper’s Cottage, The Hayloft, and Gardener’s Cottage. Together, they can host up to 13 people, making the estate perfect for everything from a romantic retreat to a large family gathering. Each cottage is individually styled but shares the same attention to detail. Think luxury Egyptian cotton bed linen, your choice of feather or microfibre pillows, Duck Island toiletries, and Smart TVs in every property. Kitchens are fully equipped, bathrooms are modern and spacious, and living rooms are warm and inviting. Whether you’re curling up with a book, enjoying dinner with family, or streaming a film, comfort is guaranteed. Dogs are at the heart of life at Tallentire Hall. A newly upgraded secure dog paddock with 6ft fencing gives pups of all breeds — including XL Bullies and reactive dogs — a safe space for off-lead fun. There’s also a warm dog shower, plus plenty of extras: spare beds, crates, throws, bowls, towels, and even high-level feeders. All breeds are welcomed here, and nervous or reactive dogs are considered at every step, with leads requested in shared areas to give everyone space. Each cottage brings something unique: Gamekeeper’s Cottage sleeps 5 across three bedrooms and two bathrooms, perfect for families. While it doesn’t have its own enclosed garden, it offers direct access to the paddock and extensive grounds. The Hayloft sleeps 6 in three luxurious bedrooms, with a private 4ft-fenced garden and beautiful first-floor views across the estate. It’s ideal for groups or guests bringing multiple dogs. Gardener’s Cottage sleeps 2 and is perfect for a romantic break. Set in the Hall’s south wing, it offers a cosy, historic escape with views of the sunken garden and space for 2 small/medium dogs (or 1 larger dog if suitable for stairs). Step beyond the cottages and you’ll discover sweeping lawns, specimen trees, a croquet lawn, a summerhouse overlooking the Solway Firth, and winding woodland paths. Wildlife is abundant, and every corner invites you to relax and unwind. Tallentire Hall isn’t just a holiday stay — it’s a true escape where history, comfort, and dog-friendly freedom combine. Whether you’re cosying up as a couple, bringing the whole family, or letting your dogs enjoy a safe, secure holiday, you’ll find this is a place where unforgettable memories are made.
