Kimberley & Christopher Ewen
Hey! We’re Kim and Chris Ewen, the couple behind XL Escapes. As lifelong pet lovers with reactive dogs ourselves, we know the struggle of finding a truly dog-friendly getaway. That’s why we created XL Escapes—a place designed for big dogs, big personalities, and big memories.
With my background in NHS project management, I focus on the big picture and making sure everything runs smoothly, while Chris’s attention to detail ensures that no part is overlooked. Together, we’re a great team to keep this business growing for you, and your dogs. At XL Escapes, we’re all about going XL—we’re extra, we go the extra mile, and we make sure you and your pups have everything you need to truly relax, unwind, and enjoy every moment.
We’re down-to-earth Geordies, love a laugh, and believe in savouring life’s little moments—especially with a cheeky drink in our hands! So, here’s to XL experiences for you and your furry friends. Welcome to XL Escapes!
Buddy
Hey, I’m Buddy! The big, bouncy, goofball cuddle monster of the family. I have zero concept of personal space and I am a total bed hog—sorry, not sorry—but I just want to be as close to my humans as possible! Apparently, I'm also called greedy bugger, whatever that means! I was rescued by the All Bullie Charity Rescue, they saved me from some awful humans, and they helped me find my new mam and dad, I love them so so much, I don't care where I go now, as long as I'm always with them.
Holly
Hi, I’m Holly. I’m a little on the shy side, but trust me, I’ve got the softest heart.
I came all the way from Bosnia, and I’m still a bit nervous around new people, but I feel safe and loved here.
I’m a complete mamma’s girl and wouldn’t have it any other way—Kim’s my person, and I’m always right by her side.
I may be quiet, but I’m loyal, gentle, and totally happy just being close to my family.
Nala
I’m Nala, the family’s ginger beauty and resident crowd-pleaser.
I’m tough as old boots, but don’t be fooled—I’m the most affectionate, snuggly cat you’ll ever meet.
I love cozying up to everyone (when I’m not ruling the house, of course).
I’m easy going, always up for a cuddle, and pretty much adored by everyone I meet. Life’s good, and I’m here to soak up every bit of attention!
Ivy
Ivy will always hold a special place in our hearts. She was rescued from Bosnia at the same time as Holly, and although she was incredibly reactive, she had a spirit that couldn’t be ignored.
Her needs shaped so much of our journey. We knew we needed a huge, fully enclosed garden with minimal foot traffic and no neighbours—something Ivy could feel safe in, and where she could roam freely. She was a little Houdini, and somehow always found a way to escape from our first home garden, which lead to the purchase of The Chase!
Unfortunately, Ivy’s story took a heartbreaking turn. She passed away in a tragic way that took us a long time to process and recover from. It was a tough year, but through that pain, we decided to adopt Buddy—exactly one year to the day after we lost Ivy. While nothing will ever replace her, Buddy came into our lives at the perfect time, and the journey we’ve been on since has been full of love, healing, and new beginnings.
Ivy’s legacy is a big part of why XL Escapes exists today. She inspired us to create a place where dogs like her—and their owners—could find peace, safety, and the freedom to just be themselves. We’ll always carry a piece of Ivy with us, and she will forever be a part of this journey.
