Kim & Chris Ewen

We are SO excited to welcome you to our home! As the founders of XL Escapes, we pour our hearts into creating a space where you can relax, unwind, and make lasting memories.

With two rescue dogs—Holly from Bosnia and Buddy from All Bullie Rescue—and Nala, our beautiful ginger cat (and undisputed Queen of the house), we understand how important it is to feel not just at home, but truly content and relaxed—especially when traveling with your furry companions.

Our goal is to offer more than just a holiday; we want to provide a home away from home where you can escape daily pressures, have a laugh, and enjoy quality time with loved ones. Whether it’s a cosy night in, exploring the local area, or simply making time for yourself, we’re here to make your stay special.

If you have any requests—big or small—just let us know. We’re always happy to help (and we love an excuse to bring a smile to your face, drink in hand, of course!).

Meet Your Hosts

Clare Farmer and Kirsty Brooks launched Rutland Rural Retreats in 2022, inspired by their own three dogs — two nervous rescues and a senior with mobility challenges. Every decision here reflects their experience: secure fencing, private gardens, and adult-only tranquillity so dogs can truly unwind. Their ethos is simple and heartfelt: dogs first, humans second.

XL Escapes Peace Of Mind Promise

Every business you see on XL Escapes has confirmed to us that they welcome XL Bullies. Before being listed, we ask the questions we’d want answered ourselves — from real experience living and travelling with XL and reactive dogs. That includes confirming they are happy to host XL Bullies, that their listing details are accurate, and that they’ve considered their own legal and insurance responsibilities. We don’t assume. We don’t guess. We ask — and they confirm. If anything changes or a business doesn’t stand by what they’ve told us, we take it seriously. If a business listed on XL Escapes turns you away because of your dogs breed, contact us. We will review it, remove them if necessary, and refund your membership.

Tucked away in the charming conservation village of Belton-in-Rutland, Rutland Rural Retreats is a super dog-friendly glamping escape where dogs come first, humans second. With just three private en-suite cabins — each with its own enclosed garden — this adult-only retreat has been thoughtfully created for nervous, senior, and reactive dogs who deserve safe, peaceful holidays too.

Full Property Description:

Rutland Rural Retreats isn’t just dog friendly — it was designed entirely around dogs. Created by Clare and Kirsty, inspired by their own nervous rescues and senior dog, this adult-only glamping haven puts four paws first and everything else second. Set within a secluded 4-acre meadow on the edge of Belton-in-Rutland, it’s a sanctuary for dogs who need calm, space, and security. The retreat is home to just three private en-suite cabins — two bespoke Scandinavian pods and a handcrafted Shepherd’s Hut — each with its own fully enclosed garden. Privacy is a huge priority here. The cabins are carefully spaced apart so dogs aren’t forced into unwanted interactions, while fencing, kickboards, and privacy pickets help create a calm, secure environment for reactive or nervous dogs. For 2025, Woodpecker’s fencing has been upgraded to 4–5ft all around, with additional picket fencing for even more privacy. Bumblebee Pod remains the owners’ recommended choice for XL Bully guests thanks to its higher fencing and secure setup, while Shepherd’s Rest offers the largest garden space of all. All three cabins now feature wood-fired hot tubs — included as standard at Shepherd’s Rest and available as optional extras at Bumblebee and Woodpecker — giving humans the chance to completely switch off while dogs safely relax nearby. Inside, each cabin has been designed to feel cosy, practical, and stress-free. Shepherd’s Rest features a king-size bed within its own separate bedroom area, while Bumblebee and Woodpecker both offer double beds separated by partitions for added comfort and privacy. Underfloor heating, modern kitchenettes, comfortable seating areas, and thoughtful touches throughout make the cabins feel welcoming year-round. Everything you need for an easy stay is already there — from cooking essentials and hairdryers to dog bowls, mats, toys, and even a doggy teepee. For older dogs or those needing a little extra support, all cabins now include doggy ramps, dog sun loungers, and there’s even a large doggy pram available with prior notice. Outside, each retreat has rattan seating, loungers, picnic tables, fire pits, and enclosed gardens where dogs can safely potter while you enjoy the countryside views. Beyond the cabins lies Brook Farm’s 15 acres, with hedgerows and paddocks left to grow naturally for wildlife. You may spot butterflies, birds, or the resident Valais Blacknose sheep grazing in the distance, while still being able to enjoy complete peace from your own private space. The soundtrack here is birdsong, rustling grass, and the gentle babble of the nearby brook. The location couldn’t be better. The Rutland Round walking trail passes right by the meadow, making it easy to head straight out for peaceful walks without needing to drive anywhere. Just 10 minutes away, Rutland Water offers scenic lakeside walks, cycling routes, birdwatching, and watersports, while the nearby market town of Uppingham is packed with dog-friendly pubs, cafés, and independent shops. With easy access from the A47, exploring neighbouring counties including Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire is effortless too. Rutland Rural Retreats is the kind of place where everything feels slower, quieter, and easier. Whether you’re enjoying sunrise coffees outside Bumblebee Pod, relaxing in the wood-fired hot tub at Shepherd’s Rest, or unwinding with sunset drinks in Woodpecker’s peaceful enclosed garden, it’s a stay designed to make both humans and dogs feel genuinely cared for.
